Why DIY Interior Design is a bad idea

Have you ever seen a successful building project without an architect involved?

I haven't.

That’s because an architect is considered a vital player in a new construction project.

But, I have seen too many homeowners, investors and builders try to "save" money by doing all of the interior design themselves and they end up in a pickle because of it!

In fact, picking out finishes and fixtures seems to be one of the most time sucking tasks among most flailing fix and flip investors and the area where most homeowners get overwhelmed and frustrated.

That's a problem...obviously.

That's why Finish Packages are at the core of REI Design Solutions interior design service offerings for homeowners, builders and investors.

In this blog post I am going to address the fact that DIY interior design is a bad idea and the 3 reasons why an interior designer brings a treasure trove of value to your renovation process. Whether you’re a homeowner embarking upon an interior remodel of your kitchen, bathroom or addition or if you’re an investor or new home builder taking on your 100th project, these are nuggets of info you must have before moving forward on your project as a lone ranger DIYer!

Hiring an interior designer instead of doing your project DIY…

Saves you time

Have you ever taken on an interior design related project and found yourself overwhelmed or at a loss as to what to select? Are you a pro at picking interior design elements and they work great in your space or do you have to go back to the retailer trip after trip until you finally (kinda) get it looking right? Have you spent any time scouring through web page after web page of your favorite retailer trying to find that perfect item for your space? It’s time consuming!! And you likely don’t really have the “eye” for that level of curating which then adds even more time to your search. An article in Freshome.com said it best “What most of us don’t understand is that interior design takes a very keen and knowledgeable eye. We may be out shopping and see something we love, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will look perfect in our home. Interior designers understand how color, lighting, room size, scale, and placement all affect how items look in a room and dictates whether they will make or break a room design.”

So the next time you think about DIYing important design elements in your space, save yourself some time and probably headaches and give your local interior designer a call and put them to the task of making your interiors look AMAZING!

Saves you money

This second point seems counter-intuitive. "You might be thinking “wait, doesn’t an interior designer charge a lot to put my space together for me?” The answer is yes. Interior designers most certainly charge for their time and expertise in bringing everything together for your space but what most people don’t realize is that you could very well spend far more than those design fees on mistakes, wrong items ordered, in-cohesive look and the list goes on. Mistakes that can cause you hundreds and even thousands of dollars! Not only that but consider that the first point, hiring an interior designer saves you time, also plays a major role in saving you money. For some of you, your time is far more valuable than even that of an interior designer so by simply leveraging your own time, you have, as a result, saved money as well!

Provides a polished, EXPERTLY Curated Look

Lastly, there is something to be said about the overall look an interior designer is able to achieve in a space. Designers have not only the skills with years of experience and practice but there is also an artistic eye interior designers possess. I love how this blog post articulates this:

“the main goal of an interior design firm is to create the “wow factor,” something that you may not be able to accomplish on your own. Designers are trained to think outside the box and create a space that breaks boundaries. Even the best DIY’er may have trouble seeing their space from a different point of view.”
